Description

This sketchbook contains 59 pages of graphite drawings and 16 watercolors made at various locations on Cape Ann, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on off-white paper depicts a harbor scene across two pages. A large tree with thick, gestural branches dominates the left foreground, obscuring simple houses. A small figure stands near the trunk. To the right, loose lines represent water containing small boats, while a larger masted ship cuts horizontally across the upper background. Dense, gray scribbled marks create a textured atmosphere against the paper.
