Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontal graphite drawing depicts a seascape, with scribbled clouds filling the upper third alongside cursive notes reading "yellow" and "blue celeste." Below, a two-masted sailboat floats on water defined by loose, horizontal strokes. A shaded rocky mound anchors the foreground, while the lower-left corner features the handwritten notes: "sea" followed by "blue + indian red." The composition uses minimal, expressive lines to capture an airy coastal atmosphere.
