Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on off-white paper features quick, gestural strokes. Dense, loopy scribbles form a central mound, while thin horizontal lines mark the background. Handwritten elements punctuate the page: "121" at the top left, cursive "blue" on the left, and "rich" below zigzagging lines at the bottom center. The loose marks vary in pressure, preserving the cream tone of the sketchbook page throughout the sparse composition.
