Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
Graphite on two off-white sketchbook pages outlines a coastal landscape with loose, gestural lines. On the left, a distant landmass floats above scribbled foreground foliage. To the right, a small boat with two masts sits near a rocky shore defined by dark hatching and jagged strokes. A spindly, scribbled tree rises from the craggy coast. The composition uses energetic, dark marks to suggest rugged terrain against the blank, cream-colored paper.
