Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing, made with quick strokes on cream-colored paper, features various gestural sketches. Across the center, six figures sit or recline, their forms defined by overlapping loops and squiggles. To our right, one figure faces forward with a circular head. In the upper right corner, the word "Laneville" is written in cursive script. In the background, looping lines extend across the page, suggesting a landscape of rolling hills.
