Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on off-white paper captures a minimalist landscape through sparse, gestural lines. Centrally, spindly vertical and horizontal strokes form a fence structure extending rightward. Below, rounded outlines suggest heavy boulders resting against the earth. To the left, dense, jagged zigzags evoke thick foliage. Varying line weights create a sense of immediacy, while vast areas of blank paper emphasize the sketch's skeletal and atmospheric quality.
