Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A vertically oriented graphite sketch depicts a simplified spire centered in the upper half of a cream-colored page. Tapering upward, the structure is rendered with sparse, energetic lines. Above, loose undulating strokes stretch horizontally, suggesting a distant landscape or clouds. The lower portion of the composition remains blank, emphasizing the sketch's placement. A small numeral "61" is inscribed in the upper right corner.
