Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on cream paper features expressive landscape sketches across two pages. On the left, a horizon sits above jagged clusters and the word "blue." On the right, dense circular scribbles create dark masses above "green" and "orange." Long, sweeping lines divide the foreground, flowing across the center crease. Varied line weights and repeated strokes form textured masses, leaving significant areas of the page blank between marks.
