Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A vertically oriented graphite drawing on beige paper depicts a seaside village across two sketchbook pages. On the left, a column of small houses and two figures are sketched in quick lines. The right page features a cluster of gabled buildings in the center, with two figures in the lower foreground. Gestural strokes outline a hill and clouds in the background. The composition uses minimal, expressive linework to suggest the landscape's form.
