Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A vertically oriented graphite drawing on beige paper depicts people in a boat and buildings on the bank. Wavy outlines of figures populate a large vessel in the foreground. Behind them, multistory gabled buildings fill the background, while thin vertical lines representing boat masts rise to the right. Rapid, gestural pencil strokes and dark hatching define the forms throughout the scene, creating a sense of movement across the sketchbook page.
