Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A vertically oriented graphite drawing on cream-colored paper features three gestural sketches. At the upper left, overlapping lines form a dense cluster of figures. To the right, a minimalist outline shows a person's head and shoulders facing away. In the lower half, a larger figure stands with their back to us, wearing a hat and a flared skirt. The entire composition is characterized by quick, loose strokes.
