Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on pale cream paper depicts a garden and house in loose, gestural lines. On the left, a low fence sits below dense trees and shrubbery. To the right, a two-story house with a chimney and doorway awning stands above scattered rocks. Minimalist marks define the forms, leaving large areas of the paper blank to create a sense of light across the sketchbook spread.
