Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on aged, tan paper depicts a gestural landscape sketch. In the foreground, dark, heavy lines form large, craggy rocks and small tufts of grass. To the left, a dense, scribbled shrub stands beside a body of water suggested by light horizontal strokes reaching toward the horizon. In the center of the water, the word "blue" is written in loose, flowing cursive script.
