Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on cream paper spans two pages, bisected vertically by the sketchbook spine. A tall tower rises behind clustered houses and trees on the right, while the landscape flattens into a horizon line on the left. In the foreground, mounds are formed by repeated, frenzied, layered dashes and sweeping curves. Marks vary from faint, thin strokes to dark, thick loops, preserving the paper's texture.
