Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on beige paper depicts a cluster of houses among dense foliage. In the middle ground, simple gabled buildings are rendered in sketchy outlines, interspersed with tall trees represented by dark, energetic scribbles. The foreground features light, gestural lines with clusters of dark marks suggesting rocks or bushes. The expressive strokes vary in weight, creating deep shadows and light outlines against the weathered paper.
