Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented sketchbook page features a graphite drawing of a gestural landscape. Wavy, thin lines form rolling hills in the background, where a solitary tree stands on a mound to the right. Dense, scribbled loops and jagged marks fill the foreground. Cursive notes, "vermilion" and "deep blue," are inscribed in the upper and middle sections. Loose, energetic strokes create a textured, atmospheric composition of terrain across the light paper.
