Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on off-white paper depicts a large boat in the lower foreground carrying several figures rendered in loose, gestural outlines. One person sits near a vertical mast on the far right, while others cluster towards the center. In the upper background, two simple houses with peaked roofs and another small vessel line a distant shoreline. Quick, varied strokes define forms against the empty, light paper.
