Description

This sketchbook contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. On the inside of the cover Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on two ivory sketchbook pages depicts a landscape sketched with loose, rapid lines. Dense clusters of scribbled foliage fill the left side. Toward the center and right, simplified, angular shapes suggest gabled houses nestled among trees. A faint horizontal line indicates a distant shoreline. "Lanesville" is handwritten in cursive at the top right and bottom left, and the number "145" is in the corner.
