Description

Gainsborough likely painted this contemplative portrait on the occasion of Mary’s marriage to Henry Christopher Wise, High Sheriff of Warwickshire. In a nod to the Wise family crest of serpents and ermine, gold snake-like forms dot the sleeves of her dress.
