Description

The scrolling floral vines in the border and the combination of gold with imperial crimson resonate with the painted depiction of the textiles that accompany portraits of the emperor. The poppy plant in the center can be identified by the leaves with multiple lacy points and may reference the opium in which Emperor Jahangir indulged daily.
A scalloped, tapered silk and metal velvet textile features a central deep red medallion containing a golden floral spray with jagged green leaves. A wavy blue-green outline frames this centerpiece. A wide tan border, decorated with winding vines, small blue-green flowers, and red foliage, surrounds the composition. Frayed, irregular edges and a worn pile reveal the intricate interplay between the velvet and the reflective metal-wrapped threads used throughout the piece.
