Description

As early as the seventh century, the practice of drinking tea and wine became an important part of elite culture in Korea. Elites of the Goryeo period commissioned a variety of types of utensils and vessels including this elegant pot, not only to make their drinking experience more exciting, but also to show their appreciation of nature.
An olive-green glazed ceramic lid takes a ridged, dome-like shape, with vertical fluting radiating from the center to form a scalloped edge. Its smooth surface reflects light along undulating curves. At the top sits a small, looped handle marked with dark spots. Beneath the fluted dome, a short cylindrical collar is visible, casting a crisp shadow. The piece evokes the organic form of a lotus leaf.
