Description

As early as the seventh century, the practice of drinking tea and wine became an important part of elite culture in Korea. Elites of the Goryeo period commissioned a variety of types of utensils and vessels including this elegant pot, not only to make their drinking experience more exciting, but also to show their appreciation of nature.
A fruit-shaped, lobed ceramic vessel is finished in a muted sage green glaze webbed with fine, dark cracks. Vertical ridges segment the rounded body as it tapers to a small base. A short, tapered spout curves outward on our right, while a looped handle on the left features a decorative curl, connecting the shoulder to the lower body. A small, circular opening punctures the top of the glossy, melon-like form.
